TSG Hawks vs Uni Lions

The Lions struck first, and quickly. Chiu Chih-Cheng led off the game with a single and came around to score on a Chang Hao-Wei single in the top of the first. Pan Chieh-Kai added an RBI single to make it 2-0 before Hawks starter Chiang Cheng-Yen recorded the third out.

Uni Lions starter Jackson Stephens held the Hawks scoreless through three innings, scattering two hits. The Hawks scratched a run across in the fourth — an RBI by Liu Shih-Hao — to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Chang Hao-Wei, who finished 4-for-5, drove in another run with a triple in the fifth to push the Lions' lead back to 3-1.

The Hawks tied the game in the sixth. Wang Po-Jung singled and Wu Nien-Ting doubled before both scored on a Lions error and a sacrifice fly, making it 3-3 after six.

The Lions appeared to take control in the top of the eighth. Chen Po-Ching, the second Hawks reliever, faced three batters and allowed three straight hits — singles by Lin Tzu-Hao, Lin Hung-Hsien and Lin Tsu-Chieh — as the Lions plated two runs to go up 5-3.

But the Hawks answered emphatically in the bottom half. Lions reliever Chiu Hao-Chun, who entered with a 1.88 ERA, walked two of the first three batters he faced. With the bases loaded and one out, Wang Po-Jung singled to score one run. Wu Nien-Ting followed with an infield single to tie the game at 5-5.

Then came the decisive blow: Liu Shih-Hao crushed a three-run home run to left-centre field, clearing the bases and giving the Hawks their first lead at 8-5.

The Lions mounted one last threat in the ninth. Huang Chun allowed two hits and a run on a sacrifice fly by Lin Tsu-Chieh, cutting the lead to 8-6. But with runners at the corners and two outs, Huang struck out Chen Chung-Yu to end the game and record his first save of the season.

• Chiang Cheng-Yen (江承諺), LHP, TSG Hawks: 6.0 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 1 K, 1 BB, 87 pitches. Kept Hawks within striking distance.

The Lions out-hit the Hawks 15-8 but left multiple runners on base in the early innings. Chiang Cheng-Yen's ability to limit damage — holding the Lions to 3 runs despite 8 hits over 6 innings — kept the game close. The decisive stat: Lions reliever Chiu Hao-Chun faced four batters, retired none, and was charged with 4 earned runs in the eighth. He entered with a 1.88 ERA and left at 2.86.

The Hawks improved to 13-16 on the season. The Lions fell to 14-15, failing to build on the momentum of Monday's shutout win. The Hawks head to Taoyuan to face the Rakuten Monkeys on 20 August. The Lions host the Chinatrust Brothers on the same date.

The Hawks showed resilience one night after being blanked 8-0, but this was a game the Lions gave away as much as the Hawks won. Chiu's implosion in the eighth masked what had been a strong start from Stephens (5 IP, 1 ER). For TSG, the timely hitting — 8 runs on just 8 hits — and Liu's clutch swing suggest an offence trending upward.
